Run Modes
Pro Only
A task's run mode, set in the New Session and Reuse Session sections of its Q button's menu, controls how the task's session starts and what the agent may do without asking. The default is Auto-Approve. Pre-approvals set on the AI Agent tab of Project Properties apply on top of the run mode. See Configuration for details.
New Session
These modes start a fresh agent session just before the task runs, replacing any session the queue had and the conversation in it:
- Plan -- The agent can read the code and write a plan for you to approve, but cannot change files. Use it for research, diagnosis, a large change you want described first, and work that runs while another session edits the same files.
- Ask For Approval -- The agent asks before each action that is not pre-approved. With the default pre-approval of all project directories, edits inside the project go ahead and edits outside it, and commands, are asked about.
- Auto-Approve -- The agent decides for itself what to ask about, so it can work without constant interruption. On Claude Code it needs a Max, Team, or Enterprise account and a recent model, or Claude Code exits with an error when it starts.
The section is headed with the name of the queue's agent, and lists only the modes that agent supports. Where an agent has no read-only mode, a Plan task runs in Ask For Approval, and where it has no Auto-Approve, an Auto-Approve task runs in Ask For Approval. On agents other than Claude Code and Codex, Auto-Approve approves every action without a safety check. See AI Agent Safety for what each agent does in each mode.
Reuse Session
These modes keep the queue's session and its run mode, and choose what happens to the conversation before the task is sent:
- Compact Context -- Summarizes the conversation to use fewer tokens while keeping its key points. This is offered only for agents with a compaction command.
- Full Context -- Keeps the whole conversation, for a task that builds directly on the one before it.
Run Mode Warnings
Wing warns before a task starts, and offers to cancel it or run it anyway, when:
- The agent's Auto-Approve approves everything without a safety check.
- The task's mode is one the agent does not have. A task keeps its mode when it moves to another queue, and a queue's agent can be changed, so a task can reach an agent without its mode. The menu still shows the mode, marked with the agent's name.
- Wing cannot hold the agent to the mode. For example, Codex ACP's Plan only tells the model not to change files.
Each warning has a Don't show this again checkbox, which applies only to that agent and mode. Dismissed warnings are listed in the Dismissed Run Mode Warnings preference in the AI Agent preferences group, where you can remove one to see it again.
Wing selects an agent's unrestricted mode only for Auto-Approve on agents that offer nothing between asking about every command and approving everything. Inside a session, every agent's unrestricted mode can also be reached with Shift-Tab, where the mode indicator shows the current mode.
