Running Tasks Without the Manager

Pro Only

While the Tasks Manager is off, you choose which queue runs each task, and start the queues yourself. You can also run queues of your own while the Manager is on.

Queuing Tasks

While the Tasks Manager is off, each task and goal on the Plan tab has a Q button at its top right. A green Q shows that the task is in a queue, whose name its tooltip gives, and a red Q that it is not. In the Modern look, a task's Q button is shown only while the mouse is over the task.

Click the Q button for a menu with three sections:

  • Queue -- Puts the task in an existing queue or a new one, or takes it out of its queue.
  • New Session -- Starts a fresh agent session for the task in the chosen run mode.
  • Reuse Session -- Runs the task in the queue's current session.

The last two set how the task's run starts and what the agent may do without asking. See Run Modes for details.

A goal's Q button queues or unqueues all of its pending tasks, and sets the queue for tasks added to the goal later. To queue several tasks at once, press Select in the Plan tab's toolbar, check the tasks, and use the Q button that appears.

Your Own Queues While the Manager Is On

While the Tasks Manager is on, the Q buttons are hidden, because the Manager chooses each task's queue and session. Right-click on a pending task on the Plan tab for these items instead:

  • Research First -- Has an agent research the task and propose a plan, changing nothing, before the task is carried out. This is unchecked by default, which leaves the choice to the Manager. In one of your own queues, an unchecked task runs in Auto-Approve.
  • Queue -- Manager Decides leaves the task Ready for the Manager to schedule. This is the default. Selecting one of your own queues, or New Queue..., runs the task there instead.

Running Your Queues

Each queue runs its tasks one at a time in one session in the AI Agent tool. When a queue starts, it creates its session or connects to the one it is bound to. A task set to a New Session run mode replaces the session before it runs, and a task set to Reuse Session keeps it, along with the conversation so far.

In the Execute tab's Queues view, + Add Queue below the queues adds a queue on the agent this project uses. Its menu also offers New Session, to put the queue on another agent, and Resume <Agent> Session or Resume Session, to start it in one of that agent's earlier conversations.

Each queue's line has these controls, from left to right:

  • Rename (pencil icon) -- Edits the queue's name.
  • Changed Files (diff icon) -- Shown once the queue's tasks have changed files. This lists the files changed by the queue's tasks, which are the files its review and commit act on. Files not in version control are marked [not in VCS]. These are usually files a shell command created, such as coverage reports, so decide for each whether to add it to version control, add it to the ignore file, or delete it before committing.
  • Auto-Advance (checkbox) -- When checked, the queue sends its next task when the current one finishes or is canceled, and a running queue with no tasks left starts each new one as soon as it is added.
  • Start/Next (play icon) -- Sends the next pending task. A queue that was not started, or was stopped, starts from its first pending task. A paused queue sends only the next task.
  • Pause -- Stops advancing once the current task finishes, without interrupting it. Use Start/Next to send one task at a time, or check Auto-Advance to go on.
  • Stop -- Interrupts the current task and returns it to pending. The queue must be started again.
  • Remove (delete icon) -- Removes the queue.

To run one task without starting its whole queue, click the send icon on the task, whose tooltip is Send to the AI agent. The task runs in its queue's session. While a task waits to run, the same icon cancels the request and leaves the task in the queue. Tasks in an Auto-Advance queue have no send icon.

Binding Sessions

Right-click on a queue for these items:

  • Bind to Session -- Selects the session this queue uses, for example to run its tasks in a conversation that already has the context they need. The submenu lists the running sessions of every agent, and can also resume a saved conversation on any agent Wing is set up for.
  • Show Session -- Shows this queue's session in the AI Agent tool. Clicking Running on a queue, or on a running task in either view, does the same.
  • New <Agent> Session / New Session -- Starts a fresh session for this queue, on its own agent or on another chosen from the submenu.
  • Resume <Agent> Session / Resume Session -- Puts the queue in one of that agent's earlier conversations.

The last two replace the queue's session, so they also move a queue to a different agent.
