I just downloaded the most recent XQuartz, OS X updates, and Wing, and still can't get the control key working on my laptop. I logged in as a default user and still doesn't work. Very strange.
What settings should I have checked on the Input tab of XQuartz's preferences?
This works fine on a newly setup iMac.

The control key doesn't seem to do anything, not when I click on code or a tab or in a tool. I tried it with the X11 preference "Enable key equivalents under X11" turned on and turned off, but that doesn't have any effect. Suggestions?
>> Under 10.6 please use the latest XQuartz from http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki rather than the X11 that comes with the install (it is largely broken). That may fix it, although note you'll need to reinstall XQuartz after every OS X update.

>> The Enable Key Equivs pref in X11 just applies to the Command key (as in Command-C for Copy, etc). Did you manually remap keys or are you talking about the "Global X11 alt key" preference in Wing?
