Sorry, I forgot to add that that python executable is run successfully from
the terminal.

Additionally (maybe you would need it), corresponding part of my
buildout.cfg looks like this:

[buildout]
develop = .
parts = python

[python]
recipe = zc.recipe.egg
interpreter = python
eggs = mypackage
