If the line is
if (self.charlist[position] != mark) and (not
self.charlist[position].isspace()):
then ctrl-J breaks & indents the line nicely. But if the two outermost
pairs of parentheses (first and second halves of line) are removed,
then the indentation is wrong. Yet as far as Python is concerned the
lines should evaluate identically -- and I'm not sure they will if the
indentation is wrong (and anyway my eye complains!).
